How to Start Your Own Stained Glass Business

 

There are many ways that people try to start their own stained glass business.  Like most things, though, there are both right and wrong ways to handle this issue.  Starting your own business – of any kind – is often difficult, and it can also be very time consuming.  In addition, it can get you into financial trouble if you are not really prepared to take a loss on the business until enough people know about you to get you started making some money.  Assuming that financial issues are not a concern, however, there are other ideas to consider.  There is a storefront to consider, ways to get customers, and the issue of a Web site.  In addition, it is important to make sure that you have all of the equipment that you need to accommodate customer requests and that you have samples that you can show to prospective customers so that they can actually see the kind of work that you do and the quality that they can expect.  It is not necessary to have an excessive number of samples, but one or two is not acceptable, either.  Enough must be available that they will showcase what kind of work you can actually do.

Once a person is sure that the equipment and samples are enough to accommodate customers, the customers must be able to find the business.  The two best ways to do this are through having a good location for a storefront and having a strong Web presence.  For a storefront, a lot of people start out small and work from their homes or garages.  While this is not a bad thing, it does bring strangers to your home and not afford you the privacy that you might want.  In addition, it is more difficult to set store hours, have a specific phone number just for the store, etc.  a small storefront is not that expensive if one looks around for a good deal, and having a physical location other than home where the business takes place is a much better and safer choice than using your home address.  The main issue with a storefront is that it is somewhere where people can easily find it, and that it is zoned for the type of work that you will be doing there.  Having enough space is also very important.  Once a place like that is located, it is important to make sure that it catches the customer’s eye and that the advertising for it is strong enough that people notice it. 

One of the best ways to advertise a storefront is through a Web site.  Some companies that don’t actually have a physical storefront, however, also have a Web site.  A site is very helpful for a business, especially if it is just getting started.  When a business is just beginning, it has to make itself known.  With a stained glass business, there are not that many competitors.  Not every business that works with glass will work with stained glass, and so people that need stained glass will seek out places that can work with it and do it well.  With a stained glass business, you will find yourself in a bit of a niche market, but this isn’t always a bad thing.  Sometimes, it is more difficult to get a business like this going quickly and actually make a good profit, but there is not usually a large demand for things like stained glass.  However, a lot of other stores sell small stained glass pieces such as wind chimes and other trinkets.  Selling smaller items such as those through a Web site can be a great way to use the Internet for marketing and selling.  This can also help build a new business, because so many people use the Internet today to find what they are looking for.
